LeBron James wishes Team Banana Boat could have united on Cavs

LeBron James without question is thrilled that longtime pal Dwyane Wade will officially join the Cleveland Cavaliers after signing a one-year, $2.3 million contract on Wednesday.

But the superstar did demonstrate some greedy tendencies by talking up how “Team Banana Boat” could have all ended up in Cleveland.

“Team Banana Boat” is comprised of James, Wade, Chis Paul and Carmelo Anthony. The name is inspired by the foursome looking goofy while seated atop the aforementioned recreational water toy during a vacation a few years back. The bit even inspired a meme courtesy of Snapchat dispatches from Wade.

Given the offseason movements of CP3 (to the Houston Rockets) and ‘Melo (to the Oklahoma City Thunder), the notion that the four friends could have joined forces in Cleveland was theoretically possible. At the same time, the logistical hurdles the Cavaliers would have had to overcome to make it work made it nearly impossible.

But that didn’t stop James from lamenting over how a Team Banana Boat reunion on the Cavaliers had a shot, albeit a long one.

“I mean, from a friend perspective, I wish (Anthony) would have came and we could have worked some things out,” James said Wednesday, via Cleveland.com’s Joe Vardon. “But at the end of the day I think our front office has done a great job and either the Knicks felt or we felt it just didn’t work out. And it worked out for the Thunder.

“I wish he would have been here. It would have been great to have him. I love Melo’s game. I love D-Wade’s game. I love CP’s game. You know know how I feel about those three but that doesn’t take anything away from what we got in that locker room which is a lot.”

James in 2016 expressed hope that the four would play on the same team at some point during his career. That said, James is said to be “happier” heading into the 2017-18 season. And with Wade in the fold, so much the better. Team Banana Boat will just have to wait for now.
