NBA 2K18 hilariously acknowledges awkward Kyrie Irving cover

NBA 2K18 finds itself in something of an awkward predicament in light of Tuesday’s blockbuster trade involving Kyrie Irving. And with a Sept. 19 release date on the horizon, there’s arguably not much to do about it.

The Cleveland Cavaliers of course finally acquiesced to Irving’s trade demands by dealing the disgruntled point guard on Tuesday to the Boston Celtics, acquiring Isaiah Thomas, Jae Crowder and a Brooklyn Nets’ first round draft pick in exchange.

But for NBA 2K18, the trade unleashed considerable collateral damage, in a manner of speaking. It was announced back in June that Irving would be the cover athlete for this year’s edition … while wearing a Cavaliers uniform.

The game’s official Twitter account on Tuesday night acknowledged the awkwardness of it all.

Whoops, indeed.

Making things even more awkward is Irving’s last dispatch on Twitter is a retweet of himself in a Cavs uniform in the game.

NBA 2K18 obviously could never have envisioned the scenario involving Irving playing out in such an unbelievable manner in the time since Irving originally issued his trade demand, which of course unleashed a dramatic saga that has been the talk of the NBA offseason.

But it is what it is and now the video game is presumably left scrambling about what to do. It is worth noting that Irving isn’t the only cover athlete for the soon-to-be released game. There are also “Legend” and “Legend Edition Gold” versions that feature Shaquille O’Neal. So there’s that.

NBA 2K18, however, has begun making in-game modifications to acknowledge the blockbuster trade. The game’s official Twitter account posted a “First Look” graphic depicting Thomas in a Cavaliers jersey.

There has been nothing yet showcasing Irving in a Celtics uniform, though. Perhaps NBA 2K18 has bigger things planned in on that front given Irving’s cover athlete status.
