30K Roger Goodell-clown towels to be handed out at Pats’ opener

A shirt mocking NFL commissioner Roger Goodell created by Barstool Sports caused a firestorm when New England Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia was spotted wearing one while deplaning following the team’s Super Bowl LI triumph. The shirt depicted Goodell as a clown, down to the big red nose, and allegedly greatly upset the commissioner and NFL brass.

And now the same website has announced it intends to hand out 30,000 towels bearing the same image at Gillette Stadium ahead of the Patriots’ home opener against the Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday, Sept. 7.

Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy took to Twitter to announce the site’s plans.

Barstool has a long and storied history of sticking it to Goodell and the NFL, so their role in an epic game day troll job is hardly surprising. Portnoy summarized Barstool’s latest madcap plan as follows.

So we know Roger Goodell is going to be at Foxboro for the NFL Season opener. We also know our Clown shirt drives him bananas. Just sends him into a blind rage. Hmm, what oh what should I do? Hey I got an idea! I think I’ll order 30 thousand of these towels to give out to all my closest friends and family on Thursday September 7th. And if my friends want to bring these towels into Gilette and wave them in Roger’s face who am I to stop them? Now I’ve seen lots of scuttlebutt on how we’ll do this? That the league won’t allow it. Well let me say this. I’ll figure out how to get the towels to the people. The people will figure out how to get them in the stadium.

Goodell confirmed earlier this week that he will be in attendance at Gillette Stadium for the Thursday night game, which officially kicks off the 2017 NFL season. The notion of 30,000 towels bearing an image of Goodell as clown being waved in unison is sure to be quite the sight if the gambit goes as planned.
