Did LaVar Ball get female referee removed from AAU game?
LaVar Ball appeared to have a female referee removed from a game after threatening to pull his Big Baller Brand AAU team off the court.
The incident occurred Friday morning after the referee assessed Ball a technical foul during the first half of his team’s game against Team BBC at the Adidas Summer Championships. Ball then pointed at her and reportedly said, “We need to get someone else in here.”
After several minutes, Ball instructed the players to pack up and leave the court, saying, “Let’s go.” The game resumed after the two coaches, Adidas representatives and the referees met on the court. A different official took over the female referee, who declined to comment afterward, at the resumption of play.
Chris Rivers, Adidas Director of Global Basketball Sports Marketing, said the decision to remove the original referee was Adidas alone.
“There was some miscommunication,” he said.
But it’s Ball’s antics that may create the most controversy, arguably in unsurprising fashion, especially in light of some things he said during the incident.
Speaking with ESPN after the game, Ball laid into the female referee.
“She’s got a vendetta,” Ball said.
“She needs to stay in her lane because she ain’t ready for this,” Ball added.
Those who have been following Ball’s antics in previous months leading up his son Lonzo getting selected by the Los Angeles Lakers with the second overall pick of the 2017 NBA Draft may find the latter part of Ball’s comments somewhat familiar.
Ball, during a March interview on FOX Sports 1 “The Herd” show told co-host Kristine Leahy to “stay in your lane” after a line of questioning he did not appreciate.
Assume to hear a lot more about Friday’s incident in the coming days. And odds are most of the talk will come from Ball himself.
