Report: Jerry Jones ’emotional’ discussing Lucky Whitehead situation

The Lucky Whitehead saga seems to have the Dallas Cowboys organization in full-on damage control mode. There obviously are myriad details and developments that need to be unpacked to fully analyze the entire situation, but the fact is the Cowboys are facing yet another PR disaster with the decision to cut loose the wide receiver.

The controversy the Cowboys organization finds itself embroiled in over Whitehead even caused Jerry Jones to become “emotional” when addressing the situation on Tuesday.

The Dallas Morning News’ David Moore reports the Cowboys owner became visibly upset over the coverage of Whitehead’s release and how the judgment of the team is being questioned.

That said, Jones wasn’t inclined to address Whitehead specifically. Instead, he opted to speak in a general terms.

“I’m not going to talk about Lucky,” Jones said. “I’m going to talk about players.

“I’ve never talked to a player that I didn’t have empathy. If you all (media) have done one thing in my time to criticize me, it is how I will back up a player to a fault. You’ve done it. You’ve done it for years. I will back them up to a fault.”

Moore reports that Jones voice “began to shake” as he continued to speak.

“So when we do make a decision around here that’s in the best interest of the team to move on, there’s one thing you can forget about and that is whether you’re being fair or whether you’ve given it consideration of what it means to the individual,” Jones said. “That doesn’t happen around here.

“Thank you guys.”

With that, Jones then ended his interactions with the media.

Whitehead’s release came amid reports an arrest warrant had been issued for his arrest related to a June shoplifting incident in Virginia. It turns out it all was a case of mistaken identity, but that development came after the Cowboys released Whitehead.

It goes without saying between the Whitehead drama and the Ezekiel Elliott’s off-the-field incidents, among other things, it’s turning out to be one tumultuous offseason for the Cowboys.
