Jason Pierre-Paul reacts to Dak Prescott’s division title guarantee

Jason Pierre-Paul on Thursday night reacted to Dak Prescott’s guarantee that the Dallas Cowboys will successfully defend last season’s NFC East title by winning the division again in 2017. But perhaps surprisingly, the New York Giants defensive end didn’t take much offense to the Cowboys signal-caller’s bold proclamation.

“I don’t condone stuff like that, but he should think like that,’’ Pierre-Paul said at a charity gala in Brooklyn, via the New York Post. “They won the division, they had a great season. If I was him I’d think like that. He’s confident, I hope his team is confident behind him.”

Prescott made his guarantee on the red carpet at the ESPY Awards a few weeks ago, saying, “We’re the Cowboys. We’re gonna win the NFC East.”

While Pierre-Paul understands Prescott’s motivation, he insisted that not only to the Giants have the talent to usurp the Cowboys as NFC East champions, the team should have much bigger goals.

“I think the key is we added a lot of guys and people are like ‘Wow, this year has to be a team that goes to a Super Bowl this year,’ ’’ Pierre-Paul said Thursday night at a charity gala in Brooklyn. “But it’s all about the hard work.’’

Pierre-Paul re-upped with the Giants this offseason with a four-year, $62 million deal, with $40 million in guaranteed money. After being limited to only eight games in 2015 after his gruesome fireworks accident the previous July 4, the defensive lineman rebounded in 2016. Playing in 12 games, Pierre-Paul notched seven sacks.

But in a two-game stretch in Weeks 11 and 12, JPP dominated, notching 5.5 sacks and 12 tackles in consecutive Giants victories. He also forced two fumbles and had a returned touchdown in those two wins.

“When other teams fear you, that’s a big difference,’’ Pierre-Paul said of the Giants’ improving defense. And he expects more in 2017.

“I think we can be a lot better than last year,’’ Pierre-Paul said. “We can be as great as we want to be. We got to put in the work. I’m all about work and effort.’’
