Michael Bennett: ‘Of course, I think Colin Kaepernick is being blackballed’
Michael Bennett is among the most outspoken players and the NFL and has been a vocal supporter of Colin Kaepernick. So it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that the Seattle Seahawks believes the former San Francisco 49ers signal-caller is being blackballed by NFL teams.
Kaepernick, despite arguably having been the most talented quarterback on the free agent market this offseason, somehow remains unemployed. Countless theories have been forwarded as to the reasons behind it, including how Kaepernick is a vegan, among other arguably dubious explanations.
Others, however, believe that Kaepernick’s national anthem protest last season is the primary impetus to why he remains unsigned. And Bennett most certainly believes that is the case.
“Of course, I think Colin Kaepernick is being blackballed,” Bennett said Tuesday during an interview on Power 105.1’s “The Breakfast Club” show, as transcribed by 247 Sports. “All the stuff to do with the issues. Nobody likes race and politics in sports. That’s one of the things no one really wants to talk about and for him to bring up race and politics, it struck a lot of people in the wrong way.
“You watch the people that really watch football and it’s middle America. And the people that really buy tickets to the game aren’t really African-American people. For him to bring that into that crowd was one thing they feel like shouldn’t be in there.”
Bennett, who previously supported the Seahawks signing Kaepernick when word got out the team had an interest, again said the quarterback would have been a great addition.
“Oh course, I thought Kaep would be a good player on our team,” Bennett said. “I wish he would have signed with us because we would have had a good backup quarterback after Russell Wilson. I think he’s a really good quarterback. I love sacking him but it would have been cool for him to be on the same team as us.”
It remains to be seen if Kaepernick ultimately lands a job in the NFL. But the case can be made it would be shocking if he did not.
