Kyrie Irving named cover athlete for NBA 2K18 (pic)

Kyrie Irving received a nice accolade on the day his Cleveland Cavaliers will take the court for Game 1 of the NBA Finals when he was named Thursday the cover athlete for “NBA 2K18.”

“I’m an avid player of this series, and I am honored to be the cover athlete of NBA 2K18,” Irving said in a release, via Dime Mag. “It’s surreal to be featured on the cover, and I can’t wait to dominate on the virtual court with all of my fans this fall.”

The recent rundown of cover athletes showcases how Irving is joining a pretty esteemed list of NBA superstars.

  • 2017: Paul George.
  • 2016: Stephen Curry, James Harden, Anthony Davis.
  • 2015: Kevin Durant.
  • 2014: LeBron James.
  • 2013: Blake Griffin, Kevin Durant, Derrick Rose.
  • 2012: Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson.
  • 2011: Michael Jordan.
  • 2010: Kobe Bryant.

The release of the latest installment of the venerable video game series is scheduled for Sept. 19.

Irving enters the NBA Finals on a roll, averaging 24.5 points, 5.6 assists, 2.5 rebounds and 1.4 steals as the Cavaliers ran roughshod over the Eastern Conference to the tune of a 12-1 record.

For what it’s worth, despite being the video game’s upcoming cover athlete for “NBA 2K18,” a simulation on “NBA 2K17” has Irving’s Cavaliers losing in seven games to the similarly red-hot and star-powered Golden State Warriors.

That’s all well and good, but games of course aren’t played on paper … or computer simulations.Game 1 of the NBA Finals tips off Thursday night at Oracle Arena.
