NBA investigating incident between Isaiah Thomas, heckler
The NBA on Tuesday confirmed it is investigating an incident involving Boston Celtics guard Isaiah Thomas and a Washington Wizards fan during Game 3 at Verizon Center.
“We are aware and reviewing,” NBA spokesman Tim Frank told Boston.com.
The incident in question, which occurred during Boston’s 118-89 loss last Friday night. In video posted to Instagram and reported Monday night by The Big Lead, Thomas can be seen responding from the Celtics bench to the heckler, who the user who posted the video said was “screaming all game” at the Celtics star.
The video does not definitively reveal exactly what Thomas said to the fan, as the audio is sub-par at best.
However, Thomas appears to react to the heckler telling him to “take his toothless (expletive) back to Boston” by getting up from the bench and saying, “I will (expletive) you up, and you know that.”
Thomas continues the dialogue by adding, “Come right here and say it.”
It obviously remains to be seen whether or not Thomas is fined for his role in the incident. Although it warrants mentioning he wouldn’t be the first Celtics player to be fined this postseason for such an incident. Marcus Smart was fined $25,000 for making an obscene gesture at a fan during Boston’s first-round series against the Chicago Bulls.
The Celtics and Wizards continue their playoff series with Game 5 Wednesday night at TD Garden. The series is tied 2-2.
