Dirk Nowitzki gifted 30,000 cans of beer for career scoring milestone

Dirk Nowitzki on Tuesday scored his 30,000th career point in the Dallas Mavericks’ 122-111 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers. And some comments he made after the game evidently earned him some sudsy rewards with which he and thousands of others can wet their whistles.

Nowitzki needed only 20 points Tuesday — he scored 25 in the win — to become only the sixth NBA player to reach the 30,000-point career mark, a milestone obviously worthy of celebrating. When asked after the game about how he’s celebrating the monumental achievement, Nowitzki quipped, “I just had a Bud Light for the first time in a long time.”

Well, it turns out the folks at Bud Light heard about Nowitzki’s affinity for their beer. So, what happened? Bud Light sent the NBA superstar a can of beer for every point he has scored in his Hall of Fame-caliber career.

The 30,000 cans of suds was delivered on Thursday to American Airlines Arena (photos here). An extra special message for Nowitzki was attached to the insane bounty of beer.

“Dear Dirk, Congrats on the 30,000 points,” the note attached to the beer read. “Here’s 30,000 Bud Lights to share with your friends! Cheers, Bud Light.”

Interestingly, Nowitzki isn’t even the first sports superstar to invoke this particular beer’s name during a post-game presser. Peyton Manning has done it on more than one occasion (here and here).

Whatever motivation inspired Nowitzki to mention Bud Light in his comments notwithstanding, the fact remains he has plenty of beer to share with his pals and teammates.

Cheers, indeed.
