Patriots fans name baby born during Super Bowl LI after Tom Brady
Sean and Collleen Gaffney had no choice but to accept their Super Bowl LI viewing experience would be altered after Colleen went into labor. But the New England Patriots fans found a perfect way to honor their favorite NFL team’s historic comeback victory: By naming their newborn son after Tom Brady.
The Gaffneys, of Plymouth, Mass., welcomed their 7.7-pound baby boy, named Brady, at approximately 8:49 p.m. Brady’s perfectly time birth — in hindsight — came moments before the Patriots launched their comeback after being down 25 points to the Atlanta Falcons.
“It was literally the middle of the third quarter,” said Colleen Gaffney, via the Cape Cod Times. “My husband’s like, ‘Now! You have to have this baby so they come back.’”
“I was, ‘Really? 25 points?’” Colleen added.
Coincidence or not, Brady’s birth prefaced the Patriots’ epic comeback from a 28-3 deficit to win in overtime in a Super Bowl for the ages.
And now, the Gaffneys will always remember — and fondly celebrate — the Patriots’ most recent Super Bowl triumph anytime they utter the name of their fourth child.
“Literally, right after he was born, they came back,” said Colleen.
Once New England sealed the victory with an overtime touchdown, it was proclaimed by Sean that the baby would be named in honor of the Patriots superstar quarterback.
This isn’t even the first time football served as inspiration for the Gaffneys when naming children, even pets. Quinn, 6, is named after dad’s favorite Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn. Sister Reese, 4, brother Knox, 2, don’t appear to be named after any football player, but the family dog, Rudy, is named after iconic Fighting Irish player Rudy Ruettiger.
And now, little Brady has joined the mix.
