Patrick Maroon gets emotional seeing son celebrate his goal (vid)

Patrick Maroon played a huge role in helping the Edmonton Oilers come back from a 2-1 deficit on the road to defeat the St. Louis Blues. But it’s what happened after the game that will likely elicit the most praise … and prompt the most waterworks.

Maroon’s tally in the third period tied up the score at two apiece. While discussing the play with Sportsnet’s Gene Principe, Maroon, who calls St. Louis home, was shown video of his young son Anthony, who doesn’t often get to see his dad play in person, celebrate the goal.

Maroon couldn’t help but become overcome with emotion at the sight of Anthony’s celebration, saying, “It’s pretty cool. It’s pretty emotional. It’s pretty cool (and) I don’t get to see him as much, but it’s pretty special.”

Pretty emotional stuff to say the least. Maroon’s own Twitter account makes it clear that he’s as much a cheerleader for his son. His Twitter bio reads, “Professional hockey player for the Edmonton Oilers. STL Native. Proud Father to my son, Anthony.”

Hockey players are thought to be among the toughest athletes on the planet. But for Maroon, the pride of being a father — especially one who has to spend a large amount of time away from his son — allowed himself a moment to drop the tough guy persona and simply be a loving dad.
