Robert Griffin III on possible return: ‘Hopefully we can go 4-0’

Robert Griffin III looks to be on track to make only his second start of the season for the Cleveland Browns on Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals after a shoulder injury derailed his first year with the team.

The Browns, without a single win in 12 games, are desperately trying to avoid infamy by way of an 0-16 season. RG3 made it clear he’s committed to the Browns for the long haul, regardless of how the rest of the season plays out.

Browns head coach Hue Jackson said it’s “too soon” at this point to declare RG3 Sunday’s starter, saying right now the team is “just knocking off the rust” due to the quarterback’s lengthy absence.

Griffin admitted he’s in the dark about his status for Sunday, not to mention the balance of the season.

“I don’t know, coach could wait until Sunday” Griffin said, via Cleveland.com’s Mary Kay Cabot. “That’s why he’s got the HC on his hat and we all trust him in this locker room. I trust him, and it’s just a matter of do they feel I’m ready to play or do they feel like I need to take some more time. So whatever their decision is, I’ll be OK with it because I’m here to be a Cleveland Brown. I’m here to help this team, not just these last four weeks but into the future.”

RG3 mentioned he hopes he can help stop the bleeding, perhaps even lead the team to a season-ending winning streak.

“It’s just an opportunity to play in the NFL with a group of guys who don’t deserve to be 0-12,” Griffin said. “So I just want to come in, give the team as much of a spark as I possibly can, have fun and hopefully we can go 4-0, because that’s what we’ve been working for in this last quarter of the season. I think it’s real important.”

RG3 signed a two-year, $15 million contract with the Browns this past offseason. He carries a cap hit of $9.25 million next season. Given the Browns never had a real chance to see if Griffin can resurrect his flailing NFL career, it would be safe to assume the starting job next season is his job to lose.
