Jameis Winston refers to ball security 11 times during nine-minute presser

Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston clearly recognizes the onus is on him to keep the offense on the field by avoiding turnovers. Why? Because the second-year signal-caller made some reference to ball security 11 times during a nine-minute press conference.

Winston’s allusions to ball security included some variation or another of “protect the football,” “take care of the football” or not “give the other team the ball,” as noted in a report from Greg Auman and Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times.

The report cites several examples of Winston’s focus on ball security, including: “Everything is a mind-set on the football field, but it’s a choice. I got a lot of decisions to make out there, so my choice is I have to protect the football.”Winston enjoyed a decent rookie season from a ball security perspective, turning over the ball only 16 times (15 interceptions, one lost fumble). Those are solid but not spectacular numbers for an inexperienced NFL quarterback. This season, however, already has turned into a nightmare for Winston on the turnover front. In four games, Winston has been picked off eight times while losing two fumbles. With the Bucs sitting in a 1-3 hole heading into a showdown with the similarly desperate 1-3 Carolina Panthers on Monday night, it’s a certainly¬†the losses will continue to mount if Winston continues to turn over the ball at such an alarming rate.[Pro Football Talk]
