Get a whiff of David Ortiz ‘Big Papi’s Retirement Party’ candle

David Ortiz will retire at season’s end and what better way to celebrate the Boston Red Sox slugger’s Hall of Fame-caliber career than filling a room with the soothing aromas from a Big Papi Retirement Party scented candle?

Yankee Candle, no strangers to forays into the sports world, is now selling said candle in honor of Ortiz. The company claims Ortiz “personally chose this fragrance,” and heralds the candle by asserting, “we think it’s a home run!”

Additional details about the “Limited Edition David Ortiz Candle,” via the company’s website:

Our limited edition Large Tumbler Candle features our fragrance MidSummer’s Night®. It’s an intoxicating and masculine blend of musk, patchouli, sage and mahogany cologne.

It sure sounds like an aromatherapist’s dream come true. Or smells, actually.

Although wouldn’t a candle that captured Big Papi carry notes of pine tar and other odors from the ballpark? Granted, said scents hardly measure up to the “intoxicating and masculine” combination of “musk, patchouli, sage and mahogany.”

But let’s be honest here: Those above-mentioned blend of scents are more befitting the smells emanating out of some hippie’s dorm room than a Hall of Fame baseball player.

It is worth noting, however, that there is a charitable component to the Big Papi candle, as $20 of the $28 price tag will go directly to the David Ortiz Children’s Fund. In the immortal words of Lieutenant Colonel Bill Kilgore from “Apocalypse Now,” that kind of beneficial outcome from something like a scented candle smells  like … victory.

A fitting aroma for a man of Ortiz’s stature and pedigree.
