Al Franken apologizes for questionable Teddy Bridgewater joke

Minnesota Senator Al Franken found himself in some hot water over a joke he cracked about the devastating nature of Minnesota Vikings quarterback Teddy Bridgewater’s season-ending knee injury that invoked some pretty big names currently dominating the world of politics.

And after receiving some blowback, Franken, a longtime comedian before his political career, took to social media to apologize.

It all started when Franken was making an appearance at the Minnesota State Fair this week when the topic of Bridgewater’s horrific knee injury came up. Sports fans in Minnesota of course find themselves in a relative state of mourning over Bridgewater. Franken attempted to tap into the devastation of it all by cracking a questionable one-liner involving Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton and disgraced former politician Anthony Weiner.

“It’s like finding out Hillary’s having an affair with Anthony Weiner,” Franken said, according to New York Times writer Mark Leibovich, who was trailing the senator at the fair, via Politico.

Franken must have quickly recognized the potential folly of his wisecrack, as he took to Twitter to issue an apology.

Given the highly charged atmosphere surrounding the recent news that Huma Abedin, a top aide to Clinton, and Weiner have separated due to his latest sexting controversy, Franken probably should have recognized such a topic was off limits as comedic fodder.
