Colin Kaepernick anthem controversy to be part of ‘Madden 17’

Colin Kaepernick’s decision to sit during the national anthem before a San Francisco 49ers preseason game over the weekend has been the source of controversy and sparked intense debates.

The protest not surprisingly has elicited a full range of reactions. While some have expressed support for Kaepernick, others  strongly condemned him for his actions. And the response has come from all corners, from his colleagues in the NFL and league analysts to political pundits and all the way up to the White House. The San Francisco Police Officers Association has even demanded Kaepernick apologize.

And now, it appears that Kaepernick’s national anthem sit-out will be a topic of discussion in the virtual world of video games.

Gamespot reports “Madden 17” will issue an update for the game so announcers Brandon Gaudin and Charles Davis will weigh in on the Kaepernick controversy.

“Kaepernick’s decision will be briefly mentioned in-game, reflecting our commitment to authenticity in Madden NFL 17,” an EA Sports senior publicist confirmed to Gamespot.

The publicist did add, however, that the new update to take into account Kaepernick’s protest is not a precedent-setter for upcoming commentary updates, saying, “Overall, our new commentary will mainly center around on-field performance, as well as major news like trades, free agency signings, and injuries.”

The goal of the commentary updates is to react in nearly real time to developments in the NFL that will help “blur the lines between a game of Madden NFL and a real NFL broadcast.”

Kaepernick has indicated that he will “continue to sit” during the national anthem, saying he refuses “to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses Black people and people of color.”

EA Sports classic motto for its considerable catalog of sports video games of course has long been “It’s In The Game.” It appears the company will be taken it one step further to include events, details and controversies that occur before the game as well.
