Phillies fan ejected by umpire was yelling homophobic jokes (vid)

A Philadelphia Phillies fan was ejected during the sixth inning of Tuesday’s game against the San Francisco Giants at Citizens Bank Park by home plate umpire Bob Davidson for heckling.

Here’s video of the Davidson sending the loudmouth fan packing.

While that may seem somewhat of an overreaction given heckling is a big part of baseball, the circumstances that led Davidson to send the fan packing justifies his removal from the ballpark.

Along with the “you suck” heckling, the fan in question also apparently was making homophobic wisecracks as well.

A transcription highlighting Davidson’s pool report, as transcribed by the Philadelphia Inquirer:

“That’s when I turned around and said ‘You know what, get rid of this guy.’ You could have your wife, girlfriend, kids – they buy tickets,” Davidson said. “They don’t have to come here and listen to that.”

“And people cheered me. Which is unusual in this town for me,” Davidson said.

The fan reportedly left on his own accord once confronted by security, so he wasn’t formally ejected.

It’s worth noting that Davidson previously ejected a fan for directing a homophobic comment at Yadier Molina during a Milwaukee Brewers-St. Louis Cardinals game in 2010.

Fans engaging in some slightly mean-spirited heckling is one thing. What this fan did arguably qualified as sufficient grounds for him to be removed from the ballpark, on his own accord once confronted or otherwise.
