Giancarlo Stanton’s Derby showing almost cost Marlins big time
Giancarlo Stanton’s record-breaking performance in Monday’s Home Run Derby at Petco Park could have proved quite costly to the Miami Marlins due to a recent ticket discount promotion. But in the end, the fine print covering the details of the promo saved the Marlins big time.
The promotion in question basically laid out the following offer via an email: For every home run Stanton hit in the Derby meant a one percent discount on a ticket purchase.
Given that Stanton bashed out a record-breaking 61 homers on Monday night, the belief was that a 61 percent discount appeared to be in the offing. Not so fast, per the aforementioned fine print, as the discount has been capped at 25 percent.
Via the Marlins official site (by way of CBS Sports):
*The Fine Print: The offer will be for select future Marlins home games during the 2016 season (blackout dates may apply). Maximum discount of 25% off regular pricing. Limit of nine (9) tickets per transaction. Tickets are not valid for resale. Offer concludes at 11:59 PM on Tuesday, July 12. Limited inventory available.
UPDATE: Giancarlo did it! Given the historic and unprecedented nature of Giancarlo’s 61 home run performance, we are preparing details for a special 61% off offer for our July 29th game, where we’ll honor Big G’s Home Run Derby victory. It’s scheduled to go live on Wednesday. Stay tuned for more details! For now, here are the details for the 25% off offer: Enjoy discounted tickets to a select game of your choice. As noted, the team will honor a 61 percent discount rate for a July 29 game, although details still need to be ironed out. Marlins president David Samson noted when reached for comment Monday that while the 25 percent cap wasn’t explicitly spelled out in the original email, Major League Baseball Advanced Media, the entity that operates team websites, caps discounts in these kind of promotions at 25 percent.
“What Giancarlo did was so cool that we are working on an additional offer,” Samson said, via ESPN, alluding to the planned promo for the July 29 game.
