Tom Brady once broke his paddle after losing in ping pong
Tom Brady’s nearly rabid competitive fire is the stuff of legend, which makes an amusing story told by New England Patriots teammate Danny Amendola detailing one of his first experiences with the QB so believable.
The story goes, as Amendola recalled it during a Tuesday appearance on ESPN, was that he was in his first season with the Patriots when Brady challenged him to a game of ping pong.
Amendola says he knew he was the superior player, leaving him with a conundrum: Play all-out and beat Brady, thereby tempting the QB’s wrath, or throw the game.
In the end, Amendola’s mad ping pong skills resulted in Brady losing his temper quite demonstratively.
“He’s so competitive … I remember one story: It was my first week in the building and he wanted to play some ping pong. I didn’t really know how to go about it,” Amendola said, via CBS Sports. “I knew I was better than him, I didn’t want to beat him too bad because I wanted him to throw me the ball … I knew I was better. Needless to say, his competitive nature unleashed a broken paddle by the end of it. It’s the reason why we love him and the reason why he’s the best quarterback.”
Brady obviously got over being shown up in table tennis by Amendola, and the two have enjoyed a productive on-field partnership, combining on 146 receptions for 1,481 yards and six touchdowns over three seasons.
And to think it all started with a broken ping pong paddle during one of Brady’s patented meltdowns. Amazing.
UPDATE: Tom Brady has since posted a reaction on Facebook to Amendola spinning said yarn.
Well played, TB. Well played, indeed.
