Jimmy Butler posts heartfelt tribute to Derrick Rose on Instagram
As the NBA world reacts to and takes stock of the blockbuster trade that shipped Derrick Rose to the New York Knicks, Jimmy Butler posted a heartfelt tribute on social media to his former Chicago Bulls teammate.
The Bulls guard on Wednesday took to Instagram to graciously praise Rose for being such a supportive mentor and inspiration, posting a photo of the two enjoying a laugh together on the bench.
“My point guard, my brother: you taught me so much since I came into this league as a 21 year old kid from Marquette,” Butler writes in his post. “For me, coming to Chicago to play and learn from you, an MVP, was eye-opening. You helped shape me into the player I am today. Helped teach me the work ethic needed to excel in this league. You are a leader, thru and thru. Always a supportive teammate and friend. I’ll always be thankful for the opportunity I had to play alongside you each night and I know you’re going to continue to be the great player and leader you were in Chicago for years to come.”
The thoughts of gratitude expressed by Butler certainly seem genuine, which is somewhat surprising as the two apparently enjoyed a somewhat acrimonious relationship, allegations that frequently became a source of insider gossip as the Bulls dropped out of the ranks of the Eastern Conference’s elite, missing out on the postseason during a somewhat disappointing 42-40 2015-16 campaign.
Perhaps there was more to the dynamics of their relationship on and off the court than what was reported. Perhaps not. But Butler certainly demonstrated a lot of class by posting such a heartfelt tribute.
