Infamous Babe Ruth ‘Bat Penis’ photograph up for auction
Touted as the “one of the most unusual and interesting Babe Ruth photographs ever offered for public sale,” an infamous photograph of The Great Bambino holding a bat between his legs dubbed the “Bat Penis” piccurrently is being offered by Lelands auction house.
The photograph of the Major League Baseball icon — officially called “Babe Ruth “Bat Penis” Snapshot Photograph” — was taken by friend and teammate Ed Wells. It was snapped at some point during Wells’ tenure with the Yankees, which came between the 1929-32 seasons.
Measuring 4-1/2 by 2-3/4 inches, the photo “is an interesting reference to the prodigious size of Ruth’s member which remains a part of the Bambino’s legend,” according to the listing.
The photograph of the Sultan of Swat in the provocative pose was obtained from the Wells Estate years ago, the listing notes.
The reserve price of $1,000 already has been met. Eight bids in total have been made as of Monday morning, topping out at $1,948.72.
“It is interesting to note that this perfectly embodies the camaraderie of the Babe and his teammates or actually of any players in team sports,” the listing reads.
The auction of the one-of-a-kind item will close on June 17 at 9:00 EST.
