Jordan Spieth congratulates National Spelling Bee co-champ (vid)
While Scripps National Spelling Bee co-champion Nihar Janga received a lot of attention after Dez Bryant praised him for tossing up an “X” celebration, fellow co-champion Jairam Hathwar also received quite the surprise from Jordan Speith.
Hathwar, a huge golf fan, noted that Jordan Spieth was one of heroes while making an appearance on “Live with Kelly.”
“He’s only (22) years old and he’s taking on these veterans and showing that it doesn’t matter how old you are, you can still win,” he said. “Put in the effort and do well.”
To his surprise, none other than Spieth was featured in a video presentation on the show, during which the PGA superstar invited Hathwar to be his guest at this year’s Barclays event at Bethpage Black (about 2:30 into the video):
“If you can putt as well as you can spell, I’m sure we’ll see you out on tour here pretty soon,” Spieth said.
Spieth’s victory over the weekend at the DEAN & DELUCA Invitational while posting a 17-under 263 erased any doubts that he was in a downward spiral following his debacle on the back nine on Sunday at the Masters. It looks like Hathwar will be able to witness Spieth’s skills firsthand soon enough.
