John Lackey on Christian Bethancourt admiring HR: ‘I got a long memory’
John Lackey was none too pleased with how Christian Bethancourt stood and admired his mammoth game-winning solo shot during the Chicago Cubs’ 1-0 loss to the San Diego Padres on Wednesday night.
Bethancourt’s towering shot to left field, his third home run on the season, came during the fifth inning and ended up on the street outside Wrigley Field.
Video of Lackey’s reaction to Bethancourt watching his home run fly out of the ballpark (video here) appears to show the pitcher bark, “You better (expletive) run!” as the Padres catcher circled the bases.
Lackey had some choice words for Bethancourt afterward as well over what he clearly felt was showboating, hinting that revenge may be exacted sometime down the line.
“How many home runs does he have?” Lackey asked, via the Chicago Tribune.
When informed Bethancourt has three on the season season, Lackey issued the following warning:
“I have a long memory,” he said. “He’ll learn.”
The Cubs saw their red-hot start come to something of a mini-thud Wednesday, dropping two games to the Padres in their home ballpark, where they were 12-3 heading into the doubleheader.
Perhaps Cubs president Theo Epstein was right to be apprehensive over all the praise the team has been receiving. Then again, the Cubs are 25-8 and remain the toast of Major League Baseball, so any overreaction probably wouldn’t be advisable.
