MLB special unis highlighted by retro Home Run Derby gear (pics)

Major League Baseball on Wednesday provided a sneak-peek at the special uniforms teams will don during the upcoming season for holidays and other special events, including the delightfully retro unis players will wear during the Home Run Derby at the 2016 All-Star Game in San Diego.

In a series of tweets posted throughout Wednesday morning, Major League Baseball showcased how each holiday-specific uniform and cap will have a distinctly original theme to compliment the holiday on which they’ll be worn.

But the case can be made that most fantastic themed uniforms the MLB will roll out this season are the jerseys sluggers will wear when taking the field for the Home Run Derby at Petco Park.

In a nod to the old-school uniforms the San Diego Padres donned from 1980-84, here’s the Home Run Derby jerseys.

As ESPN notes and according to the usual practices, All-Star players will “wear their regular team jerseys but with an All-Star Game sleeve patch and two gold stars flanking the MLB logo on the back collar” for the actual game. But the following embellishments will be added:

In addition, players’ signatures will be printed in gold on the right front shirttail, and will be accompanied by gold stars indicating the player’s number of All-Star appearances. Caps will have team-colored crowns with gold-outlined team logos, gray brims, gold star-shaped eyelets, and gold stars flanking the MLB logo on the back.

The case could be made that it would have been far cooler had Major League Baseball simply had every player at the All-Star Game rock those awesome throwback jerseys that pay tribute to a real funky time in Padres history.
