Yankees respond to John Oliver’s scathing takedown of ticket policy
The New York Yankees became the latest entity of a scathing commentary by John Oliver on his HBO series “Last Week Tonight.” And it appears the MLB team is doing its best to take it all in stride, despite the fact Oliver absolutely eviscerated the organization over its “elitist” ticket policies.
The Yankees became the subject of some scorn after Yankees chief operating officer Lonn Trust last month attempted to justify the new policy that prohibits patrons from printing out tickets for games on their own.
“If you buy a ticket in a very premium location and pay a substantial amount of money, it’s not that we don’t want that fan to sell it, but that fan is sitting there having paid a substantial amount of money for their ticket and a fan picks it up for a buck and a half and sits there, it frustrates the purchaser of the full amount,” Trost said, via NJ.com.
“And quite frankly … the fan, you know, may be someone who has never sat in a premium location. So that’s a frustration to our existing fan base.”
Oliver slammed the Yankees in a scathing four-minute segment, highlighted by the following diatribe, via ESPN:
“The New York Yankees will continue to find ways to look like the biggest elitist a–h— in all of sports,” and showed a photo of Alex Rodriguez on a yacht, over which he commented, “Ahoy, a–h—!” He also showed an unflattering picture of Trost with both hands thrust forward, displaying World Series rings.
Also as part of the segment, Oliver offered up a pair of tickets in the Legends Seats section — located in the first few rows behind home plate — to each of the first three Yankees home games for 25 cents apiece, but with one caveat.
“You must dress like you’ve never sat in a premium location before,” he said during his commentary Sunday.
To win the tickets, all viewers had to do was tweet Oliver images of what they intended to wear to the game along with the hashtag, IHaveNeverSatInAPremiumLocation, and promise to wear the get-ups to the game.

Given that the Yankees home opener Monday was canceled due to inclement weather, Tuesday marked the first opportunity for fans awarded tickets by Oliver to make an appearance at Yankee Stadium.

Regarding Oliver’s entire commentary, Yankees president Randy Levine indicated he had not seen it but offered up the following comments:
“Everyone is welcome at Yankee Stadium,” Levine said. “And I thank John Oliver for buying Yankees tickets.”
Even if he gives them to people dressed up as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles?
