Panthers good luck charm Kevin Spacey expected to attend game

“Spacey in Space” apparently is going to turn into “Spacey in BB&T Center,” perhaps as soon as this weekend.

“House of Cards” actor Kevin Spacey, who has turned into some kind of quasi-good luck charm for the Florida Panthers, is expected to be in attendance at the team’s game against the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday night.

It all started when the team started giving out a “Spacey in Space” sweatshirt to the MVP after every victory. The name of the shirt was incredibly apropos, as it featured the image of Spacey’s disembodied head floating among the cosmos.

Spacey eventually caught wind of the interesting way the team was using his likeness to generate positive mojo and celebrate victories. He later starred in an in-rink video on the Jumbotron.

The video features Spacey showcasing a No. 1738 Panthers sweater, the number of which celebrates the team’s victory song, ‘Trap Queen’ by rapper Fetty Wap, as Remy Martin 1738 cognac mentioned in the tune.

And now, although the team won’t confirm it, the Panthers’ unofficial good luck charm is expected to be at Saturday’s game, per the Miami Herald‘s George Richards. He apparently will take part in the ceremonial puck drop and meet with the team.

Spacey hinted at his anticipated appearance in a tweet posted Thursday in which he is shown packing his bag, but after zipping it up, he opens it up again to add the aforementioned No. 1738 Panthers jersey.

As noted by Puck Daddy, the Panthers sell “Spacey in Space” sweatshirts in the team store with proceeds going to the Kevin Spacey Foundation.

During a recent appearance on “TODAY,” Spacey discussed the unorthodox role he’s played with the Panthers after being presented with his own “Spacey in Space” sweatshirt.

“I’ve become their sort of good luck charm and I’m very pleased they’ve been doing incredibly well,” he said. “I’m very excited for them. I’m glad they’re doing really well and hope they can continue to win.”

And they have. The Panthers sit atop the Atlantic Division with a 40-22-9 record. And to illustrate Spacey’s tremendously positive impact upon the team, reports say the Panthers met Spacey in December during a road trip in New York.

A 12-game winning streak soon followed.
