Jose Bautista reacts to Goose Gossage calling him a ‘disgrace to the game’
Goose Gossage recently went off on a profane rant in which he called Jose Bautista a “disgrace to the game” and the Toronto Blue Jays slugger attempted to shrug off the criticism.
The legendary pitcher, who is serving as a guest instructor in spring training with the New York Yankees, ripped Bautista for his infamous bat flip during the playoffs last season.
“Bautista is a f—ing disgrace to the game,” Gossage said, via ESPN’s Andrew Marchand. “He’s embarrassing to all the Latin players, whoever played before him. Throwing his bat and acting like a fool, like all those guys in Toronto. [Yoenis] Cespedes, same thing.”
Bautista and the Blue Jays happen to be playing the Yankees in exhibition action Thursday, so he was sought out for a reaction. While he was somewhat diplomatic in his response to a certain extent, Bautista nevertheless ended his comments with a boast, albeit not one at Gossage’s expense.
“He’s a great ambassador for the game,” Bautista told ESPN. “I don’t agree with him. I’m disappointed that he made those comments, but I’m not going to get into it with him. I would never say anything about him, no matter what he said about me. I have too much good stuff to worry about his comments. Today’ is my first game [of the spring,] getting ready for a new season, hopefully, we will whoop some more ass.”
Many of the traditionalists who make up a segment of analysts, broadcasters and even former ballplayers who view baseball’s past with rose-colored glasses took offense to Bautista’s showy display, so it comes as no surprise someone as notoriously old school as Gossage not only had this point of view but chose to share it.
But the Hall of Famer didn’t only single out Bautista — and to a lesser extent Cespedes — in his diatribe. He also was critical of “nerds” who he says are ruining baseball, something he expanded upon in a lengthy, expletive-ridden rant.
“It is a joke,” Gossage said in part. “The game is becoming a freaking joke because of the nerds who are running it.
“I’ll tell you what has happened, these guys played rotisserie baseball at Harvard or wherever the f— they went and they thought they figured the f—ing game out. They don’t know s—.
One can only imagine what Gossage would have to say about Bryce Harper’s recent dismissive comments concerning baseball’s unwritten rules.
