Rob Gronkowski, Cam Newton tabbed to host Nickelodeon shows
The bigger-than-life personalities of Rob Gronkowski and Cam Newton will be on full display as hosts of upcoming shows on Nickelodeon, announced the children’s cable television network on Wednesday during a meeting with advertisers.
Newton, fresh off being named NFL MVP, will host a series entitled “All In,” in which the Carolina Panthers quarterback “will take kids on dream-fulfilling journeys.”
Gronkwoski, fresh off his … wild and crazy booze cruise, meanwhile, will be up front and center on a show called, “Crashletes,” in which the New England Patriots tight end will introduce “popular clips of sports action,” whatever that may mean.
Nickelodeon, long the home of animated fare like “Dora the Explorer” and “SpongeBob SquarePants” has seen ratings drop of late due to a highly competitive marketplace. The new shows featuring Newton and Gronkowski are the network’s attempt to “shift away from a heavy emphasis in animation to different formats, including a focus on real kids” to bring in more viewers.
Newton seems like a perfect fit for a children’s show in the style of “All In” due to his passionate dedication to charitable work involving children, not to mention how he has such a great rapport with young fans.
Gronkowski, meanwhile, is a more interesting gamble, although it cannot be understated that the man known as Gronk remains a kid at heart in many respects, albeit more in the frat boy mold than anything in Nickelodeon’s wheelhouse.
Still, if Gronk brings his patented enthusiasm and abundantly free spirit to the project, it’s bound to be a success.
