Mats Zuccarello helps New York Rangers fan land prom date (pic)

New York Rangers forward Mats Zuccarello notched an assist during Monday night’s game against the Columbus Blue Jackets at Madison Square Garden, but you won’t find it on the stats sheet.

This helper instead came when Zuccarello noticed a sign during pregame warmups being held by 18-year-old Rangers fan Vinny Mutone, who had a very specific favor to ask the NHLer:

He needed help landing a prom date with longtime friend/new girlfriend Catherine De Pinho.

“Zucc! If you give me your stick, she’ll go to prom with me!!” read Mutone’s sign.

Zuccarello, upon seeing the sign, skated to the bench, grabbed a stick and told a security guard to make sure Mutone received it.

And wouldn’t you know it, she said yes.

Zuccarello not only supplied the stick, he signed it and added an extra-special message.

“Have fun at prom,” he wrote. “Treat her right!!” He also autographed Matone’s sign as well.

It does warrant mentioning, though, that De Pinho indicated she would have agreed to go to prom with her longtime friend/new boyfriend even if his ploy wouldn’t have played out. But that doesn’t mean Zuccarello didn’t play an important role.

“Gotta help a buddy out,” Zuccarello said after the game. “Gotta help him get to prom.”

An already-special night was made that much better as the Rangers won by a score of 2-1, with one of the goals coming courtesy of none other than Zuccarello.
