Poll: Tim Tebow is the fifth-most popular NFL quarterback

Despite being out of the league for three years, Tim Tebow is still ranked as the fifth-most popular quarterback in the NFL, according to a recent poll of U.S. residents conducted by Public Policy Polling.

Technically speaking, Tebow has been in the NFL but hasn’t taken a regular season snap in over three years. He was in training camp with the Philadelphia Eagles ahead of the 2015 NFL season, only to be cut on Sept. 5.

The outcome of the poll resulted from the interviews of “410 self-described NFL fans” on Feb. 2 and Feb. 3.

The top-five quarterbacks were as follows: 1) Tom Brady (23 percent); 2) Peyton Manning (16 percent); 3) Aaron Rodgers (13 percent); 4) Cam Newton (11 percent); and 5) Tim Tebow (seven percent).

Shockingly — or perhaps not — Tebow outranked Russell Wilson, Ben Roethlisberger and Eli Manning (all at six percent) and Drew Brees (four percent) in the poll results.

It warrants noting, though, that the question posed to poll respondents did frame the ultimate outcome to a certain degree given specific quarterbacks were named:

“Given the choices of Tom Brady, Drew Brees, Eli Manning, Peyton Manning, Cam Newton, Aaron Rodgers, Ben Roethlisberger, Tim Tebow, and Russell Wilson who is your favorite NFL Quarterback?”

Had the question simply been “Who is your favorite NFL quarterback?”, it’s reasonable to argue that Tebow may not have ranked quite so high or he may not have been named at all. It would be interesting to see the results of a more open-ended poll question.

Still, it goes to show how much Tebow captivated the minds of NFL fans — or a certain segment of them — because of things like his deeply held religious views, pious personality — not to mention the enormous amount of hype surrounding him — and not necessarily his actual quarterbacking talents.

Oh, and let’s not forget Tebowing. People loved the Tebowing.

Interestingly, Tebow was tabbed as second when the following question was posed to respondents: “Give the same list of choices who is your least favorite NFL Quarterback?”

Perhaps not shockingly, Tom Brady not only was named as the favorite NFL quarterback according to the poll results but also was voted the least favorite one as well, garnering a whopping 29 percent of the vote.
