Jeb Bush’s reason for rooting for Peyton Manning? Money talks
Republican presidential candidate Jeb Bush explained to a crowd in South Carolina the reason why he was rooting for Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl 50 instead of the Carolina Panthers, an admission that likely would have resonated a lot better with the assembled crowd.
In a word, money.
“I know that y’all probably maybe had some leanings toward Carolina,” Bush told the crowd, via The News and Observer. “I was for Denver, not because of the Broncos, but because Peyton Manning wrote me a check.”
Bush arguably deserves credit for his honesty, not to mention his refusal to pander to the presumably pro-Panthers crowd.
The candidate later likened himself to Manning in terms of experience, calling the veteran signal-caller “the adult in the room” in the NFL, a role he claims as his own in the Republican primary race.
For what it’s worth, federal campaign finance records show Manning contributed $2,700 to Bush’s campaign last August.
This isn’t the first time Bush has talked football on the campaign trail. Last September, Bush seemed to be experiencing fantasy football draft remorse when he took a shot at the Buffalo Bills. Perhaps Bush would have been kinder had members of that NFL team made a monetary contribution like Manning.
