Kristaps Porzingis solves weight-loss woes with ‘American breakfast’

Kristaps Porzingis understood he would need to put on some weight ahead of his rookie season in order to bang with the plethora of NBA big bodies that populate in the paint. So he did just that, putting on 11 pounds on his wiry 7-foot-3 frame between the end of the summer league in July and the opening of New York Knicks training camp a few months later.

But the grind and rigors of the regular season has had an unfortunate effect on Porzingis. After beefing up from 227 to 238 pounds, Porzingis found himself all the way down to 233 pounds by December.

He now says he’s doing a good job of maintaining his weight after making some slight modifications to his routine and indicated part of his rapid weight loss had to do with not eating a good breakfast.

“I didn’t pay as much attention in the beginning of the season to breakfast,’’ he said, via the New York Post. “I wanted to get to the gym. I’d eat something quick and go to work out. So now I’m getting up one hour, 1½ hours earlier and having a big breakfast so I have energy for the whole day. I’m really focusing on breakfast.’’

It helps that Porzingis’ folks are living with him until March and that his mom is preparing his breakfasts for him. And she’s doing so by incorporating a very Americanized philosophy about meals: Bigger is always better.

“A lot of cottage cheese with fruit, then eggs, ham, toast,’’ Porzingis said. “It’s kind of like an American breakfast, but Latvian style. It’s a big meal. I don’t think other people have big breakfasts like me.”

Despite his inability to keep on weight, Porzingis has made his presence known in his rookie season, averaging 14.0 points, 7.8 rebounds and 2.0 blocks in 46 games. The bigger breakfasts should go a long way in helping him keep up his weight and he indicated he wants to show up at camp next fall at about 245 pounds.

But he best be careful breaking his fast with huge meals during the offseason, as the Knicks don’t want him showing up weighing 350 pounds.
