LeBron James on pal Johnny Manziel: We hope he figures it out
LeBron James and Johnny Manziel struck up a friendship and a professional partnership upon the NBA’s superstar’s return to the Cavaliers and the quarterback being drafted by the Browns, developments that occurred within months of the other in 2014.
James was asked about the very public troubles his pal and business partner — Manziel is a client of LRMR, James’ marketing firm — has been going through, off-the-field issues that culminated with some highly publicized stories in recent weeks that coincided with the end of the Browns’ season and perhaps Manziel’s career in Cleveland.
James indicated he’s more concerned about Manziel in a personal sense as opposed to a professional one, saying, “I think it’s more concerned for him individually.”
The Cavs superstar seemed reluctant to say too much about what’s been going on with Manziel, indicating he hasn’t been keeping up on all the developments, especially those related to how the Browns were unaware of the quarterback’s whereabouts amid rumors he was partying incognito in Las Vegas.
“I’m not quite sure, I don’t know all the details on it. I’ve really kind of haven’t been all up on it but I’ve heard a little of it,” James said, via ESPN. “It’s just a distraction for not only himself, but for everyone that’s around him including family, people that represent him, the people that are around him. And he’ll figure it out at some point. We all hope.”
James did in a way add some levity to the situation, albeit only by being honest, when he was asked if he ever dons a disguise when taking in the sights and sounds of Las Vegas.
“When I go to Vegas? No,” he said. “I don’t go to Vegas much, but when I do, I’m myself.”
That comment alone arguably puts the absurdity of the entire Johnny “Billy Vegas” Manziel saga in a sadly appropriate perspective.
