Fundraiser started for Denna Laing after injury at Winter Classic

As part of the festivities surrounding the 2016 NHL Winter Classic, an outdoor game held on New Year’s Day at Gillette Stadium, a women’s ice hockey game was played on Dec. 31.

While that alone obviously should be considered a significant event in its own right, tragedy befell the game when Denna Laing, a forward for the Boston Pride, was severely injured after stepping on a stick and crashed into the boards.

Laing was taken off the ice on a stretcher and taken to the hospital. At the request of her family, no details regarding her condition have been released.

Even with the clearly understandable reasons to request privacy by her family, a friend of Laing has started a GoFundMe page requesting $50,000 to help defray the costs associated with the unfortunate and tragic injury.

Those who’ve been blessed with the opportunity to get to know Denna, know that she is one of the most caring, hard-working, and selfless people on this planet. She always has and will continue to confront adversity with relentless grit that is unparalleled. Our hope is that, in this time where we know Denna would be the one stepping up for you, you find the little piece of Denna in your heart, to help her and her family through this recovery process.

The money donated to this fund will be allocated to Denna and her family to use towards funding her medical expenses, along with any other expenses that we can help her family with during this hard time. A donation of any size is greatly appreciated.

As of Wednesday morning, over $21,000 has been raised.

Sydney Daniels, who started the page, is “a family friend of Laing’s, and occasional on-ice rival when Laing, a Princeton hockey player, faced off against the Harvard team where Daniels played,” as reported by Kaitlin Cimini of Today’s Slapshot.

As noted by Puck Daddy in its report, there apparently were some insurance issues associated with holding the women’s game at the Winter Classic, but those are unclear, as is whether Laing would benefit from any insurance even if it were in place.

In either event, it’s a terrible situation and all that can be done is hope for the best related to Laing’s recovery.
