Retailer to give out $1 million in goods if Broncos shut out Raiders

A Colorado-based retailer is continuing its decade-long annual promotion where it will give out up to $1 million in free products if the Denver Broncos (10-2) shut out the Oakland Raiders (5-7) on Sunday.

Appliance Factory and Mattress Kingdom, with 16 locations in the greater Denver area, will reimburse any customer who purchases between $479 and $3,000 in its “Denver vs. Oakland” challenge. The purchases must be paid in full by Saturday.

The last time the Broncos shut out the Raiders was Oct. 16, 1995, which means while there have been a few close calls over the years, the retailer hasn’t had to pay out on the promotion during its existence.

Actually, as is almost always the case in wacky promotions such as this one, Appliance Factory and Mattress Kingdom won’t be footing the bill should the Broncos No. 1-ranked defense blank the Raiders, who are averaging 23.7 points per game this season. The company wisely took out an insurance policy to protect themselves.

The free (insert product here)-for-(insert accomplishment here) routine obviously is nothing new (see here and here and here and here). In every instance, the company not only generates a tremendous amount of goodwill among the area’s sports fans, the businesses probably make a ton of sales with the insurance provision serving as a safeguard. Pretty savvy marketing minds, indeed.
