Robert Griffin III playing role of Cam Newton on Redskins’ scout team

Washington Redskins head coach Jay Gruden revealed that Robert Griffin III is playing the role of Cam Newton ahead of the Sunday’s showdown with the 9-0 Carolina Panthers.

Gruden was asked if RG3 is helping the team prepare for the big-armed, big-bodied Newton.

“Yeah, a little bit,” he said, via Eye on Football. “He’s doing some of that, which is good, but, you know, to envision to emulate a guy that’s 6-foot-6, 265 pounds is a little bit different. But with some of the zone-read packages, they’ve seen a little bit with Kirk [Cousins] and Robert. Then, obviously, Robert is excellent at that, so we will use him effectively in that area.”

Gruden’s right. At 6-foot-2 and 222 pounds, RG3 cannot perfectly replicate Newton’s size and stature. But talk about being completely incapable of not criticizing his former starting quarterback. Although given the obviously underwhelming opinion Gruden had of RG3’s quarterbacking ability even before the Redskins head coach unceremoniously benched the team’s former franchise quarterback ahead of the start of the season, perhaps its shouldn’t be surprising that Gruden couldn’t help but lament Griffin’s inability to perfectly mimic the sizable Newton.

At least Gruden somewhat praised Griffin for being able to imitate an NFL starting quarterback, though. At least to a certain degree. After all, it’s a lot of Gruden to ask from a onetime superstar signal-caller-turned-third-string quarterback who has sunk so low he’s receiving backhanded compliments about his capacity to somewhat serve as a quarterback on the scout team.

Still, Gruden deserves some credit for pulling the trigger on the switch and going with Kirk Cousins, who has played more than capably while leading the Redskins to a 4-5 record. Still, setting aside the incredibly precipitous fall from grace Griffin career has suffered this season, one is left to wonder how RG3 would have fared had he received the support from that coaching staff that Cousins has enjoyed while acclimating to Gruden’s system.
