Jerry Jones tempers talk of signing Greg Hardy to extension

Comments made on Tuesday by Jerry Jones during his weekly radio show on 105.3 The Fan indicates the Dallas Cowboys owner may not be as eager to sign Greg Hardy to a contract extension as he previously suggested.

“Greg knows what’s expected and nobody is more aware of the scrutiny and nobody is more aware, now ever more so, of what we expect of him,” Jones said, via the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “The good news is we go forward. We see if we get what’s expected of him, which I fully anticipateyou would get. But we see how and what’s expected of him and we go from there.

“We don’t, and you know this, just the nature of this one, we don’t as a practice, discuss detail of extending or not extending. I’ll give an indication, but that’s about it. So we’ll leave it for that. I have no reason to think that Greg won’t do what’s expected of him throughout the year.”

Hardy has been a lightning rod for criticism due to several incidents that shined an unflattering spotlight on the Cowboys, including but not limited to making questionable comments ahead of games. The Cowboys put on an organizational front to defend Hardy, albeit at times in a somewhat strange manner.

In late October, Hardy missed a meeting during the week and then got into an altercation with Cowboys special teams coach Rich Bisaccia after invading a huddle during a game against the New York Giants the following Sunday.

Jones doubled down on his commitment to Hardy in the wake of those two incidents by hailing him as a “leader” of the team who as in line for a contract extension.

Jones comments’ came shortly before troubling photos surfaced that documented injuries suffered by his ex-girlfriend during a 2014 domestic incident.

Hardy then ran afoul of team policies again last week when he missed a team meeting and was reportedly was fined.

Given the many distractions Hardy has caused during his short time with the Cowboys, it’s hardly surprising that even someone as usually defiant as Jones might be reconsidering a long-term commitment to a player who brings along with him so much baggage … and continues to add to it.
