Upset mom rips ‘role model’ Cam Newton over celebratory antics

A Tennessee Titans fan who took her nine-year-old daughter to her first NFL game when her favorite football team hosted the Carolina Panthers at Nashville’s Nissan Stadium took Cam Newton to task in a strongly worded letter for conduct not befitting a “role model,” as she deemed the Panthers signal-caller.

Rosemary Plorin sent a copy of her critical correspondence to the Charlotte Observer, in which she castigates Newton for a bevy of transgressions — including “pelvic thrusts,” “chest puffs” and “arrogant struts” that she insists made a significant negative impact upon her fourth-grader daughter.

While not specifically signaling out Newton’s drawn-out touchdown celebration during the Panthers’ 27-10 victory that drew the ire of Titans players and spawned a bevy of discussion this week, it’s reasonable to assume the dance routine was a component of what upset Plorin.

Her letter condemning Newton for his antics — in which she spells out the reasons she believes Newton is in fact a role model — reads in part:

And because you are a role model, your behavior brought out like behavior in the stands. Some of the Panthers fans in our section began taunting the hometown fans. Many Titans fans booed you, a few offering instructive, but not necessarily family friendly, suggestions as to how you might change your behavior.

My daughter sensed the change immediately – and started asking questions. Won’t he get in trouble for doing that? Is he trying to make people mad? Do you think he knows he looks like a spoiled brat?

Plorin writes that she “didn’t have great answers for her” and indicated she tried to turn her daughter’s attention away from Newton.

The debate over what constitutes a role model in our society is a long-running one, and whether or not Newton actually should be treated as a role model arguably merits further discussion. But one has to wonder if Ms. Plorin would have penned such a scathing critique if it were a Titans player engaging in the same antics as Newton while her daughter looked on.
