Rex Ryan: ‘It would be fun’ to add brother to Bills coaching staff
Given that Rob Ryan is now out of a job after the New Orleans Saints relieved him of his defensive coordinator duties with the team Monday, Buffalo Bills head coach Rex Ryan, admitted he’s intrigued by the notion of adding his twin brother to the team’s coaching staff. Although he did stop well short of actually stating he intends to do so, but added a “never say never” caveat to his comments.
“Not going to lie, it would be fun,” Ryan conceded, via Pro Football Talk.
The Ryan brothers have once before coached on the same staff when father Buddy hired them both when he served as head coach of the 1994-95 Cardinals.
The concept of having the blustery brothers on the same sideline certainly is an intriguing one — and yet how the Saints defense played under Rob Ryan’s oversight obviously doesn’t make him what many would consider a sought-after coaching candidate.
But if Rex Ryan were to hire his brother, it certainly wouldn’t be to replace Dennis Thurman, who has the Bills sitting in the middle of the pack with the 16th-ranked defense. But for Ryan to give help his brother get his coaching career back on track by awarding him with a low-ranking assistant position definitely would be an understandable, even admirable, gesture.
And given the antics that have defined the coaching brothers and sometimes spirited back-and-forth between the two when they were on different coaching staffs, it probably would give rise to some real entertainment value, to put it mildly.
