Matthew Stafford’s wife rails against reports critical of husband

The wife of Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford again has taken to social media to defend her husband amid reports related to recently ousted Lions offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi.

“So I guess I’m a little behind the time since I have been enjoying myself on the beach,” Kelly Stafford wrote on Instagram. “Heard that one of the coaches, who got fired, came after matthew’s intelligence. That is seriously comical. Come after the way he plays all you want, but the second you come after his intelligence is when you look far too desperate.” She added a hashtag that noted Stafford’s Wonderlic score of 38.

Kelly Stafford, who apparently is on a tropical vacation, appeared most offended by the content of a report from NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport that indicated Lombardi became frustrated by Stafford’s poor play. Rapoport added that new offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter felt the need to simplify things for Stafford as well. Stafford’s Instagram post included screenshots of tweets from Lions backup quarterback Dan Orlovsky in which he defended Stafford.

“@RapSheet not going to sit back and let what’s being said be said,” Orlovsky wrote on Twitter. “Staff(ord) is highly highly intelligent, and has an even better football mind.”

“Just because an offense is tweaked or altered doesn’t mean it’s ‘dumbed-down.’ Great coaches adapt what they do to who they have,” he added in a subsequent tweet.

Stafford is suffering through one of his worst seasons in his career, completing 64.5 percent of his passes while throwing 11 interceptions to 13 touchdowns for the 1-7 Lions.

The Lions cleaned house this week, firing the general manager and president. Reports in the aftermath have indicated Stafford’s future with the team is anything but secure.

Stafford’s wife, meanwhile, is no stranger to weighing in on the Lions and/or her husband on social media. She closed her most recent commentary by suggesting haters can take a hike if they so please.

“And if you’re getting tired of me sticking up for my husband.. Then PLEASE feel free to unfollow..Please,” she wrote.
