Gotta support the team.

New Jersey Devils goalie prospect Scott Wedgewood, currently playing in the team’s minor leagues with the AHL’s Albany Devils, has paid homage to David Puddy by featuring the “Seinfeld” character on his mask.

The impressive work was done by renowned goalie mask artist David Gunnarsson, who posted an image of his handiwork to his official Instagram page.

The reference of course revolves around the episode “The Face Painter” in which Puddy, much to girlfriend Elaine Benes’ chagrin, paints his face up to “support the team” when he joins the gang at a Devils playoff game against the New York Rangers.

Puddy’s over-the-top exuberance and devotion to the New Jersey NHL team ultimately results in him terrorizing a priest, who believes the meathead is actually Satan incarnate after he yells at him in the street, “Don’t mess with the Devils, buddy. We’re number one, we beat anybody! We’re the Devils! The Devils!!”

Wedgewood recently discussed his fantastic mask with the Albany Devils’ official site.

“It’s something I’ve wanted for a long time,” Wedgewood said, via NHL.com. “I’m a huge ‘Seinfeld’ fan. Growing up, my oldest brother Mark loved it, got me into it. He has all nine seasons, I’ve seen every episode … It’s just one thing that kind of unites pop culture and sports, and just different teams getting recognized in TV shows and things like that … It’s been really interesting to watch and hear feedback. I’ve been getting a lot of messages, a lot of comments on my social media accounts personally, just people complimenting how cool the mask looks and obviously the work Dave did painting it. It looks tremendous.”

Perhaps coolest of all, Patrick Warburton, who portrayed Puddy, commented on the ode to his character’s antics on Twitter.

Gotta support the team, indeed.
