Flip Saunders’ family creates memorial fund in his memory
Minnesota basketball — and the NBA world at-large — is still left reeling in the aftermath of the shocking and untimely death of Flip Saunders due to complications from his battle with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. The family of the late Minnesota Timberwolves executive, head coach and part owner have announced it has created a memorial fund in tribute of the life he lived.
The Flip Saunders Legacy Fund “will be solely devoted to aiding and supporting deserving individuals or groups and to continuing the positive impact of the life of Coach Flip Saunders,” reads a statement issued by his family.
The statement also announced details of plans for both a public and private memorial service for Saunders, who passed away Sunday at the age of 60 (via the Pioneer Press):
“Private memorial services for Coach Flip Saunders will take place this weekend in the Twin Cities area. A public memorial celebration of Flip’s life will be scheduled sometime later this year with details yet to be finalized.
“Due to the private nature of the services for Coach Saunders, the family has requested that, in lieu of flowers or other expressions of sympathy, anyone wishing to express their condolences and support for Flip and his family send contributions in memory of Flip Saunders to:”

The heartfelt tributes and warm recollections from people all around the NBA and the world of basketball — whether they knew Saunders personally or not — demonstrate the indelible mark he left on the game and the many lives the basketball lifer touched during his long career on or around the court.
The Timberwolves announced Thursday a pregame video tribute to Saunders will be played prior to team’s home opener at Target Center next Monday. A patch that reads “FLIP” players will wear on the uniforms all season also will be unveiled Monday. Timberwolves players throughout the month of November will wear pregame warmup shirts that read “WE” with Saunders’ name over their hearts as well.
The Timberwolves and the Los Angeles Lakers both donned pregame warmups in honor of Saunders prior to the teams’ season-opener Wednesday.
