Jim Tomsula on Kaepernick reports: ‘I don’t know where they come from’
San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Tomsula on Wednesday reacted with befuddlement over both the source and accuracy of a report that surfaced over the weekend that Colin Kaepernick isolates himself and is on an “island” in the locker room amid his on-field struggles.
Tomsula was asked if he would be worried if the source of these reports came from within the organization.
“That would be an absolute concern,” he said, via SFGate.com. “But I don’t address those things. I don’t know where they come from … I don’t believe it’s coming from here. I mean, I don’t believe that. I mean, that locker room, I don’t believe there’s anything …”
A separate report from last week reported that Kaepernick, who is suffering through the worst season of his professional career with the 2-5 49ers (although he has downplayed his struggles), has shown signs of maturing of late, most notably by spending less time wearing his headphones while around teammates. The report from FOX Sports’ Jay Glazer over the weekend about Kaepernick’s supposed locker room isolation seems to contract that notion.
Tomsula, who on Tuesday compared a heated team meeting to arguments erupting around “an Italian dining room table,” also was asked if he’s concerned about the possibility that the leaks are coming from a front office.
“Oh, gosh,” he said. “I don’t think that. I don’t believe that. I don’t believe that stuff. Any of that stuff is counterproductive.”
From his perspective, Tomsula believes Kaepernick’s rapid rise to stardom while serving as quarterback of one of the NFL’s most respected organizations has something to do with the unflattering portrayal of his struggles this season.
“I’ve been here the whole time he’s been here and it seems like this has been what’s gone with him since I’ve been here,” he said. “There’s always something. So I guess this goes on when you’re the quarterback of the San Francisco 49ers.”
Appearing overwhelmed at times on the field and allegedly being isolated off of it won’t help matters, either.
