LeBron James hasn’t practiced since injection, Cavs insist he’s ‘fine’

LeBron James has yet to be a full participant in a Cleveland Cavaliers practice since receiving an anti-inflammatory injection in his back on Oct. 13, but head coach David Blatt insists the superstar is healthy and will be ready to go come Oct. 27 for the team’s season-opening showdown with the Chicago Bulls.

“We’re being very conscientious and cautious with him in terms of his feeling,” Blatt said, via Northeast Ohio Media Group’s Joe Varndon. “He’s fine and he’s gonna be fine, but we’re just going slowly and carefully with him. He’ll be out there very soon.”

James did some light shooting and individual work on the side during Thursday’s practice, the same as he did during Wednesday’s session. When he received the injection a little over a week ago — something that was deemed proactive, not due to a new injury — Cavs general manger David Griffin indicated the timing of it was done so James could “ramp up” practicing this week so he would be fully prepared for the team’s season opener.

Griffin also indicated the activities over the past two days have always been part of the plan set forward since James received the injection, something he also had done during the early stages of last season when he took off two weeks to rest his ailing back and nagging knee. James previously indicated he would have no qualms about having a third injection should he feel it necessary.

But overall, the company line, as Blatt stated, is that James doing fine and will continue to be fine.

“LeBron is constantly working and he’s a guy who takes care of himself 24 hours a day,” Blatt said. “I don’t have to tell anybody here what a fabulous athlete he is. He also takes care of himself, so he will be fine.”

James previously indicated that the Cavaliers won’t “be able to play at a high level” at season’s start due to injuries and other factors. Now that Tristan Thompson is back in the fold and Kevin Love looks good to go — Kyrie Irving’s absence notwithstanding — perhaps it’s James’ health which is the biggest source of concern.
