White Sox bar giving out ‘free’ beer for every Cardinals home run in NLDS
With the Chicago Cubs set to take on the St. Louis Cardinals in the NLDS with Game 1 on Friday, a pro-Chicago White Sox bar in the Windy City will be serving “free” beers to patrons every time a Cardinals player hits a home run against the North Siders in the NLDS.
McNally’s, a South Side pub in Morgan Park — smack dab in ChiSox Country — made the announcement about the free suds via its marquee.
“CUB FANS WHOS GONNA PITCH NOW?” reads one side of the sign (of course referring to dominant Cubs ace Jake Arrieta). The other touts the promotion: “FREE BEER EVERY CARDINAL HOME RUN.”
Cross-city rivalries run deep in Chi-Town, clearly.
Technically speaking, bars in Chicago apparently are not allowed to give out free booze, so the beers poured after every Cardinals homer will go for “a minimum price or really good special,” McNally’s manager Amanda told the Chicago Tribune.
One would suspect that Chicagoans would rally around one of their two major league teams if their favorite Chicago squad wasn’t in the postseason … especially for the lovable losers that are the Cubs, a team that hasn’t won a World Series since 1908. While that may indeed be the case, McNally’s clearly would rather lose money than kowtow to supporters of the hated Cubs.
No word on whether or not Cubs fans will even be allowed entrance during the NLDS or if the bar will even be airing the games. Although one would wonder why any Cubs fan would want to patronize this pub anyway.
The bar intends to run the promotion so long as the Cubs last in the postseason, meaning it could be a beer bonanza for the bar’s backers. And anyone who loves cheap beer.
