With the Detroit Lions starting off the season a surprising 0-3, many of the team’s fans have started to turn on the woeful, winless squad. But the wife of Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford took to social media to point out that not only are there some fans who remain loyal to the team, but to also thank them for their heartfelt gestures of support.

“Although many in this city have already turned their back on the Lions and Matthew, we will never stop supporting Detroit,” Kelly Stafford wrote in an Instagram post Friday. “No matter how many #9 jerseys people burn or how many negative things people say about these players they will continue to fight for a championship for this city.”

The photograph attached showed a thoughtful note along with some clothing given to the newlyweds from a local retailer, something she acknowledged, thanking the company “for sending us some Detroit apparel to get us through the winter” and their “constant support.”

It’s not all uncommon for wives or girlfriends of professional athletes to take to social media or otherwise to defend their beaus, but sometimes things don’t come off as classy as it did in this case. Just ask New York Jets wideout Eric Decker.

The Lions were a trendy pick to not only compete for a postseason berth but some pundits believes the team could compete with the Green Bay Packers for NFC North supremacy. Key departures on defense — in particular Ndamukong Suh, among others — and the offense’s ineffectiveness has quickly derailed Detroit’s playoff aspirations.

But one thing about Stafford is certain. As indicated by how he continued to scrape himself off the turf after getting bruised, battered and beaten by a punishing Minnesota Vikings defense in a Week 2 loss, Stafford is a fighter who won’t stay down, something that represents the resilient residents of the Motor City.
