Tim Tebow reportedly has ‘pretty good shot’ of making Eagles
With the Philadelphia Eagles heading into their final preseason tuneup Thursday against the New York Jets, Tim Tebow reportedly has given a good enough accounting of his skills and potential that he might end up out-dueling Matt Barkley for team’s third-string quarterback spot.
NFL insider Ian Rapoport, appearing on the NFL Network, said all indications point to Tebow making the Eagles’ final roster. But other reports indicate it ultimately will come down to how each perform in Thursday’s preseason game, although Tebow seems to have the inside track.
“In Philadelphia, it appears it’s going to be Tim Tebow vs Matt Barkley for the final quarterback spot,” Rapoport said, via NJ.com. “They are going to split reps as they try to state their case for the roster. The Eagles have made Barkley available to anyone via trade for the last couple years. No takes. As far as Tim Tebow, he has a pretty good shot to make this roster.”
Ever since the Eagles acquired Tebow, head coach Chip Kelly has practically gone out of his way to praise how much improvement he has seen in the quarterback, both since he last was on an NFL roster with the New England Patriots as well as how he’s progressed through the team’s offseason activities and training camp.
Kelly did stress, though, that as far as he’s concerned, no decision has been made whether to keep Tebow or Barkley.
“Our opinions aren’t formed,” Kelly said Tuesday. “It’s one more time for game opportunities.”
Tebow apparently has been outperforming Barkley in practice, something that arguably could tip the scales in his direction.
Regarding both quarterbacks’ respective chances of dazzling the coaches one last time, Kelly added that it matters little who starts Thursday’s game. It’s all about how each player performs when under center.
“There is a lot of weight (in this final game),” Kelly concluded.
While that may be the case, speculation makes it seem that Barkley might have to drastically outplay Tebow just to make the decision a difficult one.
