Victor Cruz: Jaguars defenders were ‘gunning’ for Odell Beckham Jr.
New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz took umbrage to what he saw as Jacksonville Jaguars defensive backs taking a run at Odell Beckham Jr. during Saturday night’s preseason match-up between the two squads.
Cruz, who was limited to only six games last season after tearing patellar tendon in October, actually did not play in the game due to a calf injury, but was clearly offended by what he was seeing on the field during New York’s 22-12 win. While not singling out any particular Jags player, he had his teammate’s back, suggesting the defensive backs may have been out to get the second-year wide receiver.
“I was a little unhappy last week,” Cruz told reporters on Tuesday, per NJ.com. “I felt some of those [defensive backs] were gunning for him. It was sad to see that go down because I couldn’t help him. I couldn’t go out there on the field and run routes with him. I couldn’t take some of the pressure off him and things like that.”
Beckham had five passes thrown his way during his time in the game, but all fell incomplete.
It’s noted in the report that Beckham himself took issue with the Jaguars defenders’ purported rough play, in particular that of safety Sergio Brown. He reportedly jawed at Brown following the second play of the game and later sought him out and gave him a shove following a play.
Beckham has once again been bitten by the injury bug during training camp with a wonky hamstring that sidelined him at the for the first four games of his rookie season, something that has caused some friendly ribbing from his teammates. Perhaps the fact that he’s finally on the mend made what the Jaguars players were supposedly doing that much more offensive.
Between the antics alleged by Cruz and the war of words playing out over Terrell Suggs’ purported cheap shot on Sam Bradford, this preseason has not been short on extracurricular activity.
