Sucker-punched Geno Smith goes Terminator on Instagram: ‘I’ll be back’
In one of the most shocking stories to emerge from NFL training camp so far this summer, it was reported on Tuesday that New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith will miss anywhere from 6-10 weeks with a broken jaw after being sucker-punched by IK Enemkpali during a locker room confrontation.
The entire incident was characterized by Jets head coach Todd Bowles as “childish” and that a physical confrontation could have been avoided because it involved a disagreement “sixth-graders could have talked about.”
“It’s something we don’t tolerate; it’s something we can’t stand,” Bowles said, via The New York Times. “And you don’t walk up to another man and punch him in the face.”
As it stands, Enemkpali now counts himself as a former Jets outside linebacker after being quickly cut by the team shortly after the incident, but Smith, despite being sidelined for a considerable stretch of time, wanted Jets Nation to know that while he can be knocked down, he’ll get back up again.
Smith took to Instagram Tuesday afternoon, and whether inspired by Arnold Schwarzenegger’s classic line from the original “Terminator” or not, nevertheless invoked one of the greatest quips in the history of modern cinema.
“I’ll be back,” Smith warned in a caption attached to a photograph in which the quarterback mugs for the camera.
Perhaps if Smith had displayed such a mean mug and intimidating countenance to Enemkpali as demonstrated in the photo during their locker room brouhaha, the young linebacker may have thought twice before lowering the boom.
The Jets, meanwhile, are left to pick up the pieces. Ryan Fitzpatrick assumes the starting quarterback role with rookies Bryce Petty and Jake Heaps serving as the only other quarterbacks at training camp.
In other words, as far as the Jets getting off to a good start this season, the only thing to say is, “Hasta la vista, baby.”
